EXP 3: FINAL SUBMISSION

EXP 3 FINAL SUBMISSION

THEORY/CONCEPT:

As abstract art forms based on rhythm, proportion and harmony, architecture and music share a clear cultural lineage. Now, through digital expression, architecture can attain new heights of creative supremacy. With this in mind, we should step out of our disciplinary comfort zones and collaborate with one another through activities such as workshops, like musicians in an orchestra. This will lead to a cultivation of diversity that will allow for the generation of new and interesting ideas. Future architects will be able to see the key elements of problems, to be systematic and logical, whilst also being innovative in design and practice.

TEXTURES

3 CHOSEN TEXTURES

The textures featured in the school all relate to the idea of balance and harmony, in the sense that everyone's ideas are of value and are worth sharing.

(Linear)
The lines form a grid, and squares of varying sizes. The squares represent different ideas, which all fit together in this one grid. This represents the idea that all ideas, no matter how big or small, will all fit together in the bigger picture.

When in isolation, a flowing line seems to lead nowhere. But when placed with other flowing lines, interesting shapes can start to appear. This is also the same with ideas - two ideas can suddenly connect together and become something even better.

(Fluid)

(Scattered)

In this texture, balance and harmony are represented through the relationship between the white branching lines and the black jagged forms. When lots of small ideas are combined together, bigger ideas and "paths" can form.

FINAL MODEL IN GOOGLE SKETCHUP

FINAL MODEL IN LUMION

Based on a new idea I've been working on over the past few weeks.
The design of the school aims to express balance, proportion and harmony - ideas that are present in both music and architecture. The curves on the roof and beneath the bridge relate to the flowing structure of music volumes. This is "balanced" out by the verticality of the wire structures beneath the school.

Lumion Files are located at the end of this post.

Landscape is inspired by Govett's Leap, located in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia.

The roof consists of curves, which form the "top" of each room. However, the roof will move (featured later in a video).

The curving nature of the roof is complemented by the curving structure beneath the school, from which vertical wires project onto the ground. This evokes a sense of lightness and delicateness, emphasizing the idea of balance.

The Library

Shadows of the school reiterate the concepts of balance and proportion. This can be viewed from school as the outer walls are transparent.

THE FOLLY

The Folly was inspired by the following image (from typing "music and architecture" into Google). The developed version also relates back to the wire structure beneath the school.

THE MOVING ELEMENTS
Please see the end of this post for better quality files (via dropbox).

ROOF
The Roof moves from side to side, mimicking the fluctuating movements of sound volumes. Different textures are featured on the underside of the roof and as these move, they can the change the atmosphere of each room.

CHAIRS
Whilst the Roof moves horizontally, the Chairs move up and down. Their location on the wires beneath the school allow students and visitors to view the folly and landscape from different perspectives.

ADDITIONAL IMAGES

Entrance Stairs - Initial steps are small, but gradually increase in size,
changing the travelling pace of both students and teachers. This should encourage them to have a fresh perspective before going into class (or to work) !

Gallery Space - the display walls adopt a curving structure, similar to the roof.

(from left to right)
Meeting Space, Engineer Studio, Architecture Studio,
Architectural Computing Studio. As mentioned before, each room has ceiling that comes from a curve in the roof, but this changes as the roof shifts position. The workshop spaces are located on the opposite side.

Lecture Theatre - initially has the highest curve, representing the place where students may become the most inspired. This would also provide good acoustics if one decides to play the piano in this room!

Meeting Space  - round tables and chairs are "shaded" by domes which can be altered in height depending on how much privacy is needed.

WEEK 2

2pt Perspectives:

Concepts describe the 2pt perspectives from left to right:

*Form follows function
*touch the earth lightly
*form follows function

*The house is a machine for living
*plan libre
*less is a bore

*Ornament and crime
*stability / static
*Architecture must burn

*from abstract to real
*Architecture should be self organising like nature
*defensible space

*Complexity and contradiction
*monumentally informal
*balance of contradicting parts

*yes is more
*less is more
*architecture is the art of how to waste space

Moving Elements (Music-Architecture Theory)

Moving Element 1:
I was inspired by the OperaLab Pavillion, where people can move up and down in their seats.

I tried making a vertical screen with this idea of moving seats, this could occupy a lecture space where students will have the freedom to "move around" when viewing lecture content.

When the seats are moving, it looks like music notes on across a stave,
or even dials on a sound control system.

Moving Element 2:

Piano Lid "Roof" - I think the mechanism of a piano lid is quite interesting (balance of weights). This could be used for an area in the architecture school, such as a meeting space where the ceiling opens.

I also find that the interior of a piano has rather interesting qualities, the image below almost looks like a room with some louvers at the top.

WEEK 1 Updated Ideas

Here is another version of the landscape, inspired by Govett's Leap in the Blue Mountains.
THEORY VERSION 2
Good things come in small packages, and should be used to our advantage. Architecture encourages us to step out of our disciplinary comfort zones, and learn by collaborating with one another through activities such as workshops. It is important to be able to see the key elements of problems to be systematic and logical, whilst also being innovative in design and practice. This cultivation of diversity will allow us to generate new and interesting solutions to improve society.

Other Idea for a Theory
As abstract art forms based on rhythm, proportion and harmony, architecture and music share a clear cultural lineage. Now, through digital expression, architecture can attain new heights of creative supremacy. With this in mind, we should step out of our disciplinary comfort zones and collaborate with one another through activities such as workshops. Like musicians in an orchestra. This will lead to a cultivation of diversity that will allow for the generation of new and interesting ideas. EXP3 WEEK 1

Week 1 ! Below are the 6 sets of one pt perspectives which combine T Blocks together:  Wasn't too sure about the theories, I also used some quotes related to architecture.

Interconnected yet distinct

Less is a bore

Yes is more

Balance of contradicting parts        Monumentally Informal

Stability/Static

Constant reflections of the past

Architecture must burn

Defensible Space

   Monumentally Informal

Architecture as a translation of music

Creating wide spaces and small spaces

Yearning for timelessness

Architecture should be self organising, like nature.

      From abstract to the real

Architecture is the how of how to waste space

      Plan libre

     Touch the earth lightly

LANDSCAPE

Having grown up in NSW, my lumion landscape was inspired by Govett's Leap in the Blue Mountains region. I had the opportunity to hike this trail when I did the Duke of Ed. Award and it was a great experience.

Article Mashup

I read 3 articles and came up with these ideas .. still needs work but here is what I have so far:

Possible Theory: "Outside the box, connect the dots"

(encouraging people to extend beyond their fields of knowledge and learn from one another)

- Architecture's ability to shape tomorrow's places is more significant than its role in producing buildings.

- Architecture is not just about the act of building, but also about the building of relationships between people.

- Architecture should encourage us to think about the abundance of knowledge that is present within society, and how knowledge from different fields can be utilised to achieve a common vision. We should strive to step out of our disciplinary comfort zones, and learn by collaborating with one another. Good things come in small packages, and we must acquire the skills to seek out and harness everyone's abilities.

- In the field of engineering, it is important to be able to see the key elements of problems, to be systematic and logical and to persevere.

- Technology is bridging gaps in communication between architects and engineers. Architectural-computing have become increasingly important to developing innovation in design and practice, especially in the cultivation of diversity.
